The concept of getting your domain name backlinks is not as complicated or as cut and dried as you may think. In fact, it can be quite an ugly process! But to simplify things a bit, we'll make use of the most common form of internet marketing, article marketing. The goal is to create as many backlinks as you can that point to your site.
One of the first things you need to do is to put your domain name into your article. You can't just have any old domain name here; you have to choose one that fits what you are promoting. After you have chosen your domain name, make sure that you have a relevant keyword in mind. Don't try to stuff your articles with keywords you don't think your reader is going to be searching for, because they will click away rather than reading your article.
Next, write as many articles as you can that are targeted to whatever niche you are trying to promote. If you have several niches to promote, the more articles you can write about those niches. The more you write, the better chance you have of having other webmasters add your site to their directories. This is an easy way for you to get your backlinks for free. It only takes a couple of minutes of your time, but the results can be dramatic. The more directories you are listed in, the higher your rankings will be, and the higher your backlinks will be.
Some of the most popular and successful people on the internet have written hundreds of articles on various topics. They have put their sites right into the search engine's hands and got backlinks to their site that have been rewarded with massive amounts of traffic. There is no secret or short cut to getting backlinks like this. They simply do it! And it works for them because they are successful.
The same holds true for you. There is no magic trick that you can use to get a ton of links to your domain name. I know you're probably thinking, "How does he know that?! ". Well he knows because he has done it himself.
You need to build relationships with other webmasters, and I mean real relationships. You can't just go into the forum and think you're going to get approved every time. You're going to have some form of communication with the other person. Don't assume that they will remember you and your site because you don't have a signature. It's a small thing, but something that many people overlook. People like when they get a personal message from somebody, even if it's a "virtual" one.
Just ask around in the forums. Ask people who might have a site similar to yours what kind of relationship they have with another site owner. You never know. You might find yourself building a relationship and outgrowing your competitors site. Who knows?

Forum posting can be very time consuming. You have to spend hours talking about a topic and answer questions related to that topic. Then you have to wait for others to start commenting on your comments and this can take hours. Also you have to constantly monitor the forums to see if people are making comments on your posts and answering questions.
Blogging is a great way to build a ton of backlinks quickly and efficiently. You set up a blog that is related to your site or niche and entice people to read it. Once they read it you have to create posts and replies linking back to your site. Usually there will be some sort of link at the bottom of the post that directs them back to your site. This method can take some time but is effective and a great way to increase your site traffic.
